FAQ
Let us help answer your questions about Island Joy RidesWho travels with Island Joy Rides?
We tend to attract people who are open to experiencing new things, whether it’s cycling for the first time, trying a raw oyster, or dancing to the beat of a First Nations drum. Couples, singles, and families can all become a Joy Rider.
Why tour with Island Joy Rides?
We go above and beyond in everything we do. Our tours are designed to offer you opportunities to experience our area with all of your senses – to help you discover the magic of our island. There are so many factors that make an outstanding cycling company – fresh and delicious food, spotless hotels (in our case they are all waterfront), passionate guides, scenic cycling routes, unique cultural experiences – and an attitude that is open to meeting new people and trying new things.
Do I need to be a strong cyclist to enjoy your tours?
Not at all! Each tour is carefully designed to recognize, welcome, and encourage the varying skills and interests of our riders. The tours are flexible and most include easy to moderate riding, plus optional routes for the more energetic cyclist. You set your own pace. You can ride with others from the group, pair off, or ride alone, enjoying the quiet countryside. You may choose to bike ahead, or stop along the way to sample local products, photograph a village, or just relax along a river. No awards are given for finishing first — our goal is to help you enjoy getting to know the area in your own personal, intimate way.
Does my travel companion have to be in the same shape I am?
We understand that many people travel in pairs but don’t necessarily have identical tastes. For that reason, we offer a variety of distance options and the support vehicle. One of you might choose to ride hard all day while the other might prefer to visit every museum and head to the spa in the afternoon. It is your holiday and you can do as you wish. You may even want to skip a day of activity and spend the day shopping, swimming, or simply unwinding at the hotel.
How large are the groups?
We take a maximum of 12 guests to ensure a personalized, boutique experience and we will run our tours with a minimum of 2 people. Our guests come from all over and are a diverse mix of couples, singles, and families.
How hilly are the rides?
We do our best to keep you on quiet roads and along the coast as much as possible and would rate our rides moderate, with plenty of flat and some unavoidable hills.
What about the guides?
Each tour has 2-3 tour local leaders who are keen to share their passion for our island and the outdoors. Their priority is you and making your experience unforgettable.
How long are the daily rides? Do I have to ride the whole way? Can I ride more?
An average day is about 45-65 km, but daily distances vary and specific mileages are detailed on the pages describing each tour. You don’t have to ride the whole way, you are welcome to jump in the support vehicle to do something else or just take a break for a while. For those who would like additional riding, there are optional miles almost every day.
If I’m travelling alone, will you find me a roommate or can I have a private room?
Our prices are based on double occupancy (two people per room). We will endeavor to find a roommate (of the same gender) for guests wishing to share a room. If you sign up more than 95 days in advance of your trip and no roommate is available, 50 percent of the private room charge will be due at final payment. Should a roommate be found before your trip departs, the private room charge will be refunded. If you sign up less than 95 days in advance of departure and no roommate is available, the full private room charge will apply. Should a roommate be found within 95 days, the private room charge will be refunded. On some trips, twin rooms are limited or unavailable; a private room charge applies if a shared twin room is not available, regardless of the number of days before departure.
How far in advance do I need to book my tour?
The farther in advance, the greater availability of dates you’ll find.
What is the average temperature in the summer?
Our average temperature is about 23 C – but it seems it is getting warmer every year. We suggest you come prepared for every kind of weather.
Can I bring my own bike? What bikes do you provide?
You are welcome to bring your own bike. It should have a minimum of 21 gears and please have it thoroughly checked in advance by a competent bike mechanic. Alternatively, we are happy to provide you with our bikes, Giant Escape 0 hybrid touring bikes that work well on roads and easy forest trails at no extra charge. Our bikes come equipped with a front handlebar bag, rear carrier, water bottle, and flat pedals. We are also happy to put your own clipless pedals (pedals that attach to your biking shoes) and seat on your bike if you wish.
Can I purchase an Island Joy Rides gift certificate?
We think an experience is one of the nicest gifts of all. Gift certificates are available in any amount for both guided and self-guided tours.
What if it rains?
You always have the option not to ride but we often find our guests are keeners and still want to ride in the rain. We haven’t had many raining days the past few summers but, if it does happen, we have several options. We can assure you that rain will not ruin your vacation.
