Our Chef on a Bike Series offers unique culinary experiences – all of which feature a private chef, a behind-the-scenes look at our local food scene, a leisurely cycle, and culminate with a meal combining the flavours from your journey.

Embark on an extraordinary culinary cycling tour, Sea Sights & Salty Bites, guided by the esteemed Chef Richard from Kingfisher Oceanside Resort!
Gather at the Kingfisher and shuttle to Cumberland, where our adventure begins. We’ll pedal through serene forest trails in Coal Creek Historic Park, immersing ourselves in the area’s fascinating history. Discover the secrets of historic Chinatown, No. 1 Japanese Town site, and the renowned No. 1 and No. 2 coal mine sites.
Join Chef Richard as he leads us on a chef’s tour of Cumberland Farmers’ Market, where we’ll uncover the region’s freshest ingredients.
Prepare to be amazed as we visit Comox Valley Mushrooms, a paradise for mushroom enthusiasts. Explore their captivating facility and gain insights into the meticulous process of cultivating these savory delights.
Next, we’ll head to the beach to meet the incredible team at Outlandish Oysters, champions of sustainable oyster farming. Indulge in the briny goodness of freshly shucked oysters, harvested with care from the ocean’s bounty. Combine this with Wayward Distillery, a hidden gem renowned for their exceptional artisanal spirits. Discover the artistry behind their craft as we savor their unique flavors, raising a glass to the day’s memorable adventures.
Finally, we conclude our tour at the award-winning Kingfisher, where Chef Richard will work his culinary magic. Feast on a meal crafted from the bountiful ingredients we’ve gathered on our journey, celebrating the region’s finest flavors.

Forage by bike with our local Chef and visit suppliers of seafood, urban farms, and beautifully crafted food. Cycling point to point you will experience Campbell River for a fun and unique city tour. After the ride we will sit riverside in the Island Joy Rides River Room for a meal of our finds.

A 10-minute ferry ride from Campbell River, Quadra Island is an island worth exploring. This vibrant community has strong ties to the land and sea. From artists to farmers, First Nations to fisherman, Quadra’s stunning scenery and friendly people will leave a lasting impression. This tour is suitable for all fitness levels.

We invite you to explore the protected, nature-filled waters of the Campbell River Estuary on our leisurely paddling experiences. Where the river meets the ocean, our beautiful estuary is filled with natural beauty, interesting wildlife, and an inspiring history of transformation.

SUNSET PADDLE
Immerse in nature by kayak
Experience our area from a different perspective on this peaceful 2-hour guided paddle in the tranquil waters and secret channels of the Campbell River estuary. The jumping salmon and curious seals are so close you can almost touch them! This multi-sensory experience leaves from our house on the river bank and includes a delicious dessert, bubbly/refreshment, and a whole lot of local JOY.

A River-Inspired Evening of Outdoor Luxury
We invite you to join us for an intimate evening of connection, infused with delicate treasures of the beautiful Campbell River Estuary. Self-guided tours offer the freedom to explore at your own pace. We have done all the planning for you so you can simply sit back and enjoy your ride. We book your accommodations, meet you at the hotel with your bikes and accessories, share our carefully designed routes, suggest our favourite foodie stops and points of interest, transfer your luggage, offer emergency support, and even challenge you with optional suggestions designed to encourage you connect with locals. Choose between Set Calendar or Custom dates.
Set Calendar Dates are set for people who are interest in riding on the same days as others, while still cycling independently and at their own pace. We have set aside hotel rooms so your tour is guaranteed to be available.
Custom Dates are available at any time between May and October. As our hotel partners are very busy, the sooner you book, the sooner we can confirm they have availability. Please CONTACT US to find out if dates are available.
One of the best parts of our self-guided holidays is our JOY BOOK. This little treasure is like a journal and has been years in the making. It provides information, maps, optional challenges, and a place for a reflection. You feel like we’re on your shoulder supporting and encouraging you along the way – but you’re free to do as you please.

ISLAND TIME: 4-Day/3-Night Self-Guided Tour
Courtenay, Cumberland, Comox, Campbell River, and Quadra Island
ITINERARY
MEET ’N GREET/ DAY ONE: Farms and Waterfalls of Courtenay (35 km/+387m)
Whether you are choosing Set Calendar or Custom Dates, we will meet you at the Old House Hotel and Spa to fit your bikes and prepare for your joyful adventure. Your first ride will guide you along the ocean, beside farms, and through the peaceful forests of Courtenay. Nymph Fall Nature Park, one of the highlights of the ride, boasts 151 acres of second-growth forest with the river and falls raging over a series of exposed bedrock ledges. It’s the perfect place for a picnic or a refreshing dip. As you make your way to the city centre, you might just want to pop into the chocolate shop for a sample or some house-made gelato or to our local craft brewery for a cold one. At the end of the day, the salty air and outdoor pool or event the spa, at the Old House Hotel will help you to relax and settle into your island time.
DAY TWO: The Land of Plenty (35, 55 or 70 km/Cumberland +351m/ Comox +312m)
You’re off to explore the village of Cumberland and the seaside town of Comox today. Once a coal mining hub, Cumberland is quickly growing into a desirable niche community and dynamic tourist destination. Its coal mining past and funky new vibe make it a great place to explore. Choose to ride a short distance today and enjoy the pool and spa of the Old House Hotel after lunch or, if you’re looking for more, we suggest you explore Comox. From breweries and vineyards to forests donned “a place of serenity and beauty,” by the First Nations, this little town is waiting to be discovered. Enjoy the Old House Hotel and Spa again this evening.
DAY THREE: Coastal Cycle to Campbell River (54 km/ +426m)
A ride north to Campbell River today, (renowned as the Salmon Capital of the World) will take you through secret farms, past Miracle Beach Provincial Park, and along the ocean. Keep your eyes open for seals, eagles and even whales as you soak in the breathtaking scenery. Stop for the biggest ice cream in town (guilt-free, of course) at the Discovery Fishing Pier on your way to the Comfort Inn and Suites, your ocean-view hotel for this evening.
DAY FOUR: Quintessential Quadra Island (21 to 33 km/+453m)
As you board the ferry to Quadra Island, you are reminded to slow down, breathe in the fresh ocean air, and take time to enjoy those little things that often go unnoticed in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Beautiful beaches, a First Nations village, a few hills, and adventuresome coastal trails (that require a bit of portaging) make this a ride to remember. Count on finishing your tour between 3:00 and 4:00, in time to make your way to your next destination or, stay and play here a little longer. Your tour finishes in Campbell River.

As you embark from Buckley Bay for a 3km ferry ride to Denman, be prepared to enter a Utopian society where residents have chosen to leave behind the big city life for a slice of rural living. Freedom, informal, self-sufficient, relaxing, and alternative are just some words often used to describe life on these islands. Denman, the first of the two islands, is best known for its vast and fertile farmlands. A second ferry ride from Denman will take you to Hornby Island: a thriving arts community with an emphasis on local organic agriculture/permaculture and small-scale energy-efficient building standards. Hornby’s beach at Tribune Bay is simply magical, a perfect place for a picnic.

Count on finishing your tour between 2:00 and 3:00, in time to make your way to your next destination or, stay and play here a little longer. Your tour ends in Campbell River.
